My reaction to the site:
I thought that the site
seemed helpful. It aimed to educate about the cause. Overall I
think that the site is helpful and could be beneficial. I have never
heard about this specific cause until now. The site provides lots of
information regarding how wonderful their cause it but I would have liked to
see what some of the other positions are that are not favoring
it. However, I can totally see why they didn’t put those on the site
(or somewhere easily accessible – because I didn’t find them anywhere)
Information that
surprised and/or helped develop new understandings:
Learning that 16 states
are already on board, I am kind of surprised that Washington is not on the
list. I feel like Washington State is pretty on top of it when it comes
to technology. Thinking about it, I feel that our administrators
and investigating it fully to be sure of the possible
repercussions.
Information I disagree
with:
I will admit that I am
not one to be super critical of something that I am not very familiar
with. That being said the only things that I disagree with are some
of the suggestions that the site says that you should do. It isn’t
that I disagree with them as much as I’m not sure how much people could
actually do these things. For example the site says that if you are
a “business leader or community leader” you can “provide students with
authentic learning opportunities”. I’m not sure that business
leaders or community leaders with no education on educational wording they
won’t necessarily know what authentic learning opportunities are. I
am sure that if they really wanted to find out it really wouldn’t be that hard.
Implication for students
and myself as a contemporary educator:
I believe that this
would be extremely beneficial for students. I think that the
district that I am in would have no problem complying with what the site is
trying to orchestrate. I know that Washington State is moving
towards the common core standards.
Some things that I worry about would be how much time it would take out of our
already tightly packed day. Obviously, I would want to incorporate
technology into each subject but some of the 21st century
skills could prove challenging to work into each grade level.
Don't be too harsh on
the comments, but they are appreciated - thanks! :)
Ali,
ReplyDeleteI have used community leaders in the past and it works well if you prepare the students beforehand. I can not understand why any state would not want to become a P21 Leadership State. I would imagine that the P21 organization would provide help to those states that could not provide a plan to fuse the three Rs and four Cs. I also feel that this site is extremely beneficial for students and teachers.
Ali, I teach in New Jersey and yes we are a P21 Leadership State. But to be honest before this class I had never heard of the P21 organization. My district is just starting to move toward updating and providing technology in the classroom. Now that our district is providing us the resources they are expecting us to use them. I think you are doing everything you can and more eventhough your state is not a P21 Leadership State. Keep up the great work! It may not be a bad idea to mention the organization to your administration.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate your honest feed back about P21. This was my first time hearing aboutP21 Leadership State. I do not understand why people do not have a student centered focus. You are doing a great job by learning all you can in moving toward integrating technology in the classroom. It will take community leaders like you to speak up for our children. It is critical to know our students. We do not want to leave no child behind. Definitely your feddback make this very clear to the community and administrators.Every student deserves a chance to maximize their potential and given the resources in technology is a start.
ReplyDeleteP21 is new to me as well. I will be interested to learn more about why there are so few states on the list. It's possible that the process is long and there are states in the waiting. You mentioned the common core standards and I wonder how these skills tie in. We are about to start using common core this next school year. I am interested in learning more about this initiative and will post any findings.
ReplyDeleteAli/All,
ReplyDeleteThe P21 is very new to me. I have to read up more about it, but from the little I have learnt, I think that it wi=ould be beneficial to our students. I think that in this era, technology should be incorporated in all classrroms. I have seen the benefits of it as it relates to students learning and it is a skill that is needed by them as they become adults.
I am also willing to learn more about the common core standards and how they can be incoporated in my classrooms.
